Job Description: IGCSE Head of Department (English)

Leadership & Strategic Responsibilities

• Departmental Governance: Lead and manage the English department, fostering a culture of high expectations and professional accountability.

• Curriculum Architecture: Oversee the planning and rigorous review of the curriculum and schemes of work to ensure full alignment with IGCSE and A-Level requirements.

• Quality Assurance: Ensure the delivery of effective teaching and learning through regular lesson observations, work scrutiny, and data-driven assessments.

• Staff Development: Mentor, support, and appraise English faculty members; lead departmental meetings and internal Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions.

• Progress Monitoring: Rigorously track student attainment data to identify trends and implement interventions that ensure every student reaches their potential.

• Inspection Readiness: Ensure all departmental policies and practices align with school standards and UAE inspection frameworks (eg, SPEA).

• Literacy Advocacy: Act as a lead proponent for a school-wide reading culture and elevated literacy standards across all key stages.

Candidate Requirements

• Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in English (Language or Literature) is essential.

• Qualifications: A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) , PGDE , or an equivalent recognized teaching qualification.

• Mandatory Experience: 3–5 years of leadership/teaching experience specifically within the UAE focusing on IGCSE O-Level and A-Level is strictly required.

• Expertise: Deep understanding of British external examination boards (Cambridge/Edexcel) and UAE Ministry of Education/Inspection regulations.
